Book Review: A Perfect Proposal by Katie Fforde

A Perfect Proposal

Today it is my pleasure to bring you my review of A Perfect Proposal by Katie Fforde.

Sophie Apperly has spent her whole life pleasing others – but when she realises her family see her less as indispensable treasure and more as general dogsbody, she decides she’s had enough. So when an old friend offers her the chance of a lifetime, she decides to swap Little England for the Big Apple, and heads off to the land of opportunity.

From the moment Sophie hits the bright lights of Manhattan she’s determined to enjoy every minute of her big adventure. And when fate throws her together with Matilda, a spirited grande dame of New York society who invites her to Connecticut for Thanksgiving, she willingly accepts. English-born Matilda is delighted with her new friend – though her grandson Luke, undeniably attractive but infuriatingly arrogant, is anything but welcoming.

When Luke arrives in England a few weeks later, Sophie hardly expects him to seek her out .But Matilda has hatched some complicated plans of her own – and so Luke has a proposal to make …

I really enjoy reading Katie Fforde – whilst her novels are easy to read, they are full of feeling and A Perfect Proposal is no different.

Sophie Apperly is watching life pass her by as she spends her time caring for her ungrateful family.  When she is pushed by her family to care for ‘Evil Uncle Eric’, an uncle she finds to be less than evil (probably only those who don’t seem to be going after his money!) she discovers a family oil well that could be worth some money if someone is willing to seek out all of the shares.  When the opportunity arises for her to head off to New York City to look for answers in the great oil mystery, she finds herself unable to turn it down and finds herself on a flight to visit her old friend.

A chance meeting with the elderly Matilda at her friends art gallery finds Sophie travelling to Connecticut to spend Thanksgiving with her family.  Naturally, Matilda’s grandson Luke is more than a little suspicious of the young woman who has appeared in their lives – particularly given that Matilda is rather wealthy!

I really enjoyed reading this novel.  Sophie is such a wonderful character – she’s unassuming, at times rather downtrodden by her family but she generally seeks to help people whilst looking for no reward for herself.  In comparison Luke comes across initially as arrogant – I enjoyed following his character development though as you learn more about him and why he values his family so much.  Matilda is of course the star of the show – she’s not just a wealthy old lady.  She’s a loving woman, protective of her family and more than happy to be cunning and conniving when its for other peoples own good!

This is a lovely, light read.  Perfect for our days in lockdown where you may want a novel to lose yourself in!  So grab yourself a glass of wine, a piece of cake (if you’ve managed to find any flour for baking!) and settle down in your favourite armchair!

*BLOG TOUR* Willow’s Wedding Vows by Debbie Viggiano

WillowCoverForTwitter

Today it is my pleasure to bring you my review of Willow’s Wedding Vow’s by Debbie Viggiano as part of this excellent blog tour.

Wedding vows have never been this personal…

Willow has been living with marriage-shy Charlie for more years than she cares to remember and is old-fashioned enough to want a wedding band and a loads-of-sex honeymoon before stretchmarks and nipple shields.

So when the once-wary Charlie surprisingly goes down on one knee, Willow doesn’t question why her boyfriend is suddenly so keen to rush her into saying “I do”.

The first clue comes as Willow is zipped into her Cinderella dress, the second as she bobs into the wedding car, and the third as the Roller swings towards its fairy-tale destination… leaving a shell-shocked Willow desperately trying to figure out what to do next.

A bride can do anything she wants on her wedding day, but nobody expected her to do this…

Willow and Charlie have been together forever (well a decade anyway!), and if ever Willow brings up the topic of marriage Charlie runs a mile.  Despite owning a home together, he appears to be a commitment-phobe.  Willow adores him though, and she convinces herself that she is happy as they are, that what they have will be enough for her until he suddenly proposes!

Charlie loves Willow – he thinks.  She does everything for him at home, she’s attractive, but he just can’t bring himself to marry her.  His ‘friend’ Kev starts to put pressure on him and suddenly he finds himself getting very hot under the collar.  Maybe he has got a good thing with Willow?

Ben is Charlie’s best friend.  But he is really struggling to like him.  Ben thinks Willow is amazing, he just cannot understand why Charlie won’t commit to her.  Now Ben has found someone her can really see a future with, he finds himself struggling more and more about being involved in Charlie and Willow’s situation.

Emma is Willow’s best friend, but she seems to be spending a lot of time feeling guilty.  She has met someone who seems intent on breaking her heart, and she just cannot bring herself to tell Willow the truth about Charlie.

Willow is a great character, even if she is a little naïve.  She loves her boyfriend Charlie, almost unconditionally.  She is able to see past his faults, although it becomes increasingly apparent that love really might be blind.  She trusts him implicitly, and when he proposes to her instead of hearing warning bells all she can hear is wedding bells! She is about to get her happy ever after!  I loved Willow, but there were times that I struggled with her naivity.  She took everything that Charlie said at face value – the thought that he could lie to her doesn’t even cross her mind.

I have to say though, I think Charlie may have been my favourite character.  He’s a dog that’s for sure, but I loved watching him squirm as he continually finds himself in awkward situations of his own making.  It was more than a little satisfying watching him sweat!  Don’t get me wrong, how he treats Willow is unforgivable but I thoroughly enjoyed following him dealing with the consequences of his own actions.

Debbie Viggiano has written a great, easy-read novel with some excellent twists.  Whilst I did guess who ‘Kev’ was before the big reveal, she throws in some great curveballs to keep you guessing.  Willow certainly grows as a person throughout the novel, realising her self-worth and I always enjoy a novel that has good character development.  This is an all round great novel, perfect for reading during these strange times.

*BLOG TOUR* The Cornish Confetti Agency by Daisy James

CORNISH CONFETTI_ KDP version copy

Welcome to my stop on the blog tour for The Cornish Confetti Agency by Daisy James.

Welcome to The Cornish Confetti Agency!

When the grand finale of Lexie Harrington’s catwalk show ends with a disastrous twist on the ‘ice bucket challenge’, she knew her highly-strung boss would fire her on the spot. What she wasn’t expecting was to bump into her fiancé cosied up with an attractive blonde in the restaurant opposite their apartment!

Desperate to escape her heartbreak, Lexie flees to her childhood home of St Ives to hold the fort at The Cornish Confetti Agency for her best friend Freya, leader of the yummy mummy network and firm believer in ‘happily ever afters’. Little did she know that delivering a Caribbean-themed wedding in sunny Cornwall would rival the fashion industry for drama, tantrums and mysterious goings on.

Who is responsible for dousing the bridesmaid’s dress with tomato ketchup? Or hiding the bride’s beloved Jimmy Choos? Or attaching googly eyes to everything in sight?

The perfect Cornish wedding? Is there such a thing for The Cornish Confetti Agency?

So the last time I joined Daisy James, it was to follow her series The Paradise Cookery School, which I loved.  The Cornish Confetti Agency is the first book in her new series, and already I am hooked!

Lexie Harrington coordinates high end fashion shows, a job that she absolutely loves.  So, when her latest catwalk show ends in disaster and her personal life simultaneously combusts she finds herself escaping back to her childhood home of St Ives in Cornwall.  Her best friend Freya, her knight in shining armour, offers her the opportunity to escape to the country and help manage a wedding she is co-ordinating as part of her business The Cornish Confetti Agency.

Co-ordinating a wedding can’t be more stressful than co-ordinating a catwalk show, can it?

Theo Barker is a journalist for the Bristol Gazette, and more specifically he has been tasked with covering the wedding for the newspapers wedding column.  He finds himself teamed up with Lexie when mysterious things start to happen to the wedding party.  Can they work together to find the source of the issue, thereby ensuring the wedding goes off without a hitch?  And will they find what they are looking for in each other along the way?

This is such a great opening novel to the series.  I loved Lexie, I loved the wedding party and I loved Theo.  All were great characters, very relatable and you couldn’t help but root for them.  I really love Cornwall, so it was so lovely to read all about it, you can really imagine yourself in the sun kissed settings – if lockdown cancels my holiday there this year I will most certainly be visiting as soon as I can when life starts to return to normal!

This novel is perfect if you are seeking some escapism from our current troubles (lets be honest, who isn’t?!), and even better the next novel in the series, Summertime at The Cornish Confetti Agency is due out on 11th June so we won’t even have to wait long to continue following Lexie’s adventures! I for one will be reading it as soon as I can get my hands on it!  So grab yourself a glass of something fizzy, kick back and relax in the sunshine (safely of course!) and enjoy this novel!

Daisy James loves writing stories with strong heroines and swift-flowing plotlines.  She especially likes to create sunshine-filled settings in exotic locations – the Caribbean, Tuscany, Cornwall, Provence – so she can spend her time envisioning her characters enjoying the fabulous scenery and sampling the local food and drink.

When not scribbling away in her peppermint-and-green summerhouse (garden shed), she spends her time sifting flour and sprinkling sugar and edible glitter.  She loves gossiping with friends over a glass of something fizzy or indulging in a spot of afternoon tea – china plates and teacups are a must.

*BLOG TOUR* New Year New Guy by Angela Britnell

New Year New Guy

Today it is my pleasure to bring you my review of New Year New Guy by Angela Britnell.

Out with the old life, in with the new …

When Laura’s bride-to-be sister, Polly, organises a surprise reunion for her fiancé and his long lost American friend, Laura grudgingly agrees to help keep the secret. And when the plain-spoken, larger-than-life Hunter McQueen steps off the bus in her rainy Devon town and only just squeezes into her tiny car, it confirms that Laura has made a big mistake in going along with her sister’s crazy plan.

But could the tall, handsome man with the Nashville drawl be just what reserved Laura Williams needs to shake up her life and start something new?

As you will be aware, I am a fan of Angela Britnell and her novels.  I really like the fact that they are regularly set both in England and America, giving us a taste of both countries, as well as the difference in personalities between the English and American characters.  New Year New Guy is no exception.

Laura and her sister Polly could not be more different.  Polly does things to the extreme; she loves hard, she’s spontaneous and she is not organised.  Laura on the other hand is serious, controlled and hates surprises.  Her life is ordered, bordering on the bland.  She works hard as a nurse, and she is more than happy on her own.  Having left behind a bad marriage she is keen to avoid relationships at all costs.  So when asked by her sister to assist in surprising her fiancée with his long lost American friend, she is less than happy.  Even more so when she finally meets the imposing Hunter McQueen, a man she is expected to hide in her home until the big reveal can be made.

Hunter McQueen is an all American man.  He is successful in his field but his success only hides a past that he can not move forward from.  He knows travelling to England could be a mistake but he needs something else in his life, some way to battle and overcome the demons that have continued to haunt him.

I really enjoyed this novel.  All of the characters were well rounded, shaped by their own individual past experiences.  It was clear to see how they could help each other move forward in different ways, but it was also good to see that sometimes moving forward isn’t that easy.  They each had their own barriers to cross, and the novel wasn’t just about one character being there to save them.  Don’t get me wrong, this is a love story – but it is more than that, its about facing up to your past in order to move forward into your future

The setting in Devon provided the perfect backdrop for this story, rain, cream teas and all!  It was nice to also get to visit Hunter’s home too, with its rugged mountains and peaceful setting.  A real contrast the Devon countryside!

I am more than happy to recommend this novel.  It’s another great read at a time when we all need a bit of escapism (with some travel thrown in for good measure!).  If you’d like to read more of Angela Britnells novels, check out my reviews below;

*BLOG TOUR* A Shop Girl at Sea by Rachel Brimble

shop girl cover

Today it is my pleasure to help kick off the blog tour and bring you my review of A Shop Girl at Sea by Rachel Brimble.

Bath, 1912.

Amelia Wakefield loves working at Pennington’s, Bath’s finest department store. An escape from her traumatic past, it saved her life. So when Miss Pennington sets her a task to set sail on the Titanic and study the department stores of New York, she couldn’t be more excited –or determined!

Frustrated with his life at home, Samuel Murphy longs for a few weeks of freedom and adventure. Meeting Amelia on board the Titanic, Samuel can’t help wonder what painful history has made the beauty so reserved. But he already has too many responsibilities for love.

Ruby Taylor has always kept her Pennington co-workers at a distance. Making sure her little brother is safe has always been her priority. But when that means accepting Victoria Lark’s offer of sanctuary, more than one of Ruby’s secrets is under threat of being revealed…

A riveting and uplifting saga, perfect for fans of Elaine Everest and Fiona Ford.

As you will be aware, I have followed the Pennington’s series ever since the first book was released.  With the release of A Shop Girl at Sea today, the whole series has had a facelift, and each book has been given a new title.  If you’d like to see my reviews of the previous books in this series, follow the links below;

A Shop Girl in Bath

A Shop Girl Get The Vote

A Shop Girl’s Christmas

A Shop Girl at Sea is the fourth book in the wonderful Pennington’s series, a series based around the Pennington’s department store in Bath.  Pennington’s is a true rival to big department stores in the city of London, and Elizabeth Pennington dreams that she can make her store rival even the huge stores on New York.  In her quest to make Pennington’s an international name amongst department stores, she enlists her employee and friend, Amelia Wakefield, to make the historic trip to New York aboard the Titanic to explore shopping trends of the major New York stores and their shoppers.

Samuel Murphy is a man weighed down by his responsibilities.  His mother and two sisters are entirely dependent on him following the tragic death of his father, and he sees his own dreams slip out of reach as it becomes clear that they are unwilling to let him go.  When an opportunity arises to work on the Titanic for its maiden voyage, he grasps it with both hands knowing that this is a once in a lifetime chance that could really further his prospects.  When he unexpectedly meets Amelia onboard, he finds himself hoping for a future that he thought out of reach.

This is the first novel in the Pennington’s series which is actually set predominantly outside of the department store.  Amelia’s time on the Titanic is beautifully described, you really feel as though you are there with her experiencing the decadence and luxury of the ship deemed to be ‘unsinkable’.  Of course, we all know the story of Titanic; its hard not to.  But it was lovely to read a novel that focussed on the passengers and how they felt about being on such a historic journey, rather than on the tragedy that followed.  Naturally, the tragic sinking cannot and is not ignored, but it was nice to see that it wasn’t the sole focus of this novel.  Instead it was focussed on the characters who had each suffered in their own way, and how that fateful journey changed them both.  It changed their outlooks on life, and rather than being victims it was nice to watch them both emerge stronger than ever.

I hope to learn more about Ruby Taylor in future novels, as I felt there was more to say about her past, present and future.  I really enjoyed the brief look at her life though, and the hardships she faces going forward at a time when people were certainly not open-minded or welcoming to anyone that was deemed to be different.

This really is a lovely novel, and an excellent addition to the Pennington’s series.  Whilst it can definitely be read as a standalone, I highly recommend getting all four novels.  They will provide you with the perfect escapism during this period of uncertainty and lockdown.  Stay home!
